Leghorn to Durban and Durban to Leghorn
There was a time when voyages to and from South Africa were more common, but for the moment, there are only a few opportunities. MSC offers one Durban sailing this autumn.
This autumn, the MSC SINFONIA sailed from Leghorn for Durban via Naples, Suez, the Seychelles and Madagascar, a voyage of 20 nights, a voyage that occurs annually.
On 30 March 2010, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines' BALMORAL leaves Cape Town for Dover via Walvis Bay, Takoradi, Dakar, Casablanca and La Coruna, a voyage of 22 nights.
MSC SINFONIA then returns on 1 April 2010 (no joke) from Durban, on a 21-night passage back to Livorno via Mauritius, the Seychelles, Suez and Naples again, one of the few liner offerings to South Africa these days.
Although South African opportunities have been less frequent recently, the activities of pirates off Somalia have convinced some operators to avoid the Suez Canal on some future voyages, and we are likely to see more such opportunities in 2011. One such opportunity is now being offered in P&O's AURORA on 4 April 2011, when she leaves Cape Town for Southampton on what will be a 15-night voyage via Walvis Bay, St Helena and Madeira.
Finally, the 124-passenger RMS ST HELENA still makes a couple of voyages a year to and from Portland, Dorset, in addition to her usual sailings from Cape Town to St Helena and Ascension.
Also Year-Round Cargo Ship Voyages: Passenger service by modern container ships: Twice monthly between Antwerp and Cape Town. Antwerp is three hours from London St Pancras via Eurostar.
